My New Drum Set
While it's not quite Terry Bozzio's set, I bought a new drumset over the weekend.
A Pacific (DW) CX-5 in Royal Onyx color. It's super-loud, and super awesome.
See my drumset by clicking here.

I also bought a new snare drum. It's a Spaun acrylic snare. Bad-ass.

Two Of A Perfect Pair
Here's something cool and unexpected. Over at the Discipline Global Mobile download site, they have the classic King Crimson percussion duo "B'Boom" available for free download. You can download it here

"Big Deal", you say. That track is widely available on Thrak! "Not So", I say. Here the have it broken into three tracks. The first track is Bill Bruford in isolation. The second is Pat Mastelotto in isolation. The third is the duo playing together.

Very cool idea DGM!! I'm actually going to transcribe the parts and learn to play them. Anyone want to do a duet?

VVARVOLK!
I came accross this awesome footage of drum duo Weasel Walter and Nandor Nevai. They go by the name of VVARVOLK. Brutal drumming at it's finest.

Why I Love Metal circa 2007
There's been a nice resurgance in technical metal as of late. I've been getting into a few bands that I think move beyond many of the cliches of the death metal/grind genre and are making it exciting again.

THOLUS
The drummer used to be in Estradasphere, so you know it's over the top. Futuristic themed death metal with totally over the top rhythms and a kind of jazz fusion vibe. I just got their debut CD "Constant" and it totally slays.

MARTYR
They haven't put out an album since "Warp Zone" in 2000, but the new album from these crazy canadians was well worth the wait. "Feeding The Abscess" is even more techincal and over the top. Lots of mathy, start/stop rhythms and more jazz fusion goodness.

TWISTED INTO FORM
Kaj Gornitzka's (ex-Spiral Architect) new band, takes the Spiral Architect template and makes it a little less noodly. The bass is turned down a bit so you can hear what everyone else is doing. If you loved S.A., you'll love this.

ZILTOID THE OMNISCIENT
New project from Devin Townsend, the genius behind Strapping Young Lad. Some sort of crazy alien concept. The alien needs Earth's coffee supply. We must surrender it. Seriously.

Fox News Hard Hitting Journalism

Guess, what america? There's a "new" music scene called Emo, that's exploded on the internet! And there are "scene kids" who like it! And punk rockers don't like them! Apparently there's lots of screaming involved! Won't someone please think of the children?!
